Excerpt from A Bird in the Hand

BREANNE

You have to cancel Jonathan.

JESSICA

That was Jonathan.

BREANNE

John, then. Damn it, this is too confusing.

JESSICA

No way. He is far too sexy to cancel on.

BREANNE

You can’t have two hot dates in one night.

JESSICA

Sure I can.

BREANNE

How do you figure?

JESSICA

It’s all about scheduling. I’m meeting Jonathan at his place at 6:00.

BREANNE

Where’s his place?

JESSICA

Riverside.

BREANNE

Riverside? Casanova’s is on 24th. That’s half way across the city.

JESSICA

It’s fine. As long as I leave Jonathan’s by 7:30, or 7:40 at the latest, I can make it.

BREANNE

That’s not a very long date.

JESSICA

How long could he possibly last?

BREANNE

Jessica!

JESSICA

Don’t worry about it. I will just tell him there is an emergency at the office.

BREANNE

Some emergency photocopying?

JESSICA

He doesn’t need to know the details.

BREANNE

You’re insane.

JESSICA

That’s never stopped me before. We will have a nice dinner, I’ll entice him into the bedroom after the main course, have mind-blowing sex, a quick shower and I’m off to Casanova’s for dinner with John.

BREANNE

You’re going to have two dinners?

JESSICA

I’ll need the energy for dessert. (Realizes) I’m going to need a change of clothes.

(Exits into her bedroom)

BREANNE

What? Why do you need a change of clothes?

JESSICA

(Off) I can’t wear the same outfit for John that I wore for Jonathan.

BREANNE

It’s not as if they are going to compare notes.

JESSICA

(entering) This is not a first date blouse. Second or third date maybe, but not the first. I need a first date blouse.

BREANNE

Oh no.

JESSICA

Come on, please. I’m desperate. I’m already running behind.

BREANNE

You always do this.

JESSICA

I’ll take you shopping tomorrow. I promise. I’m buying.

BREANNE

I’m holding you to it.

JESSICA

(Exiting into Breanne’s bedroom) You’re the best. Thank you so much. I owe you one.

BREANNE

(Aside) Another one, you mean.

JESSICA

(Off) I need something that will really get John’s attention. Low cut… cropped waist.

BREANNE

That’s called a bra, Jessica.
